Unni’s enchanting Thodi

Unnikrishnan has developed a style of his own. He is able to straddle film and classical music with ease.

Unni opened his concert at Hanumath Jayanthi festival at Nanganallur with a vibrant Varnam in Nattai - Sarasija - by Palakkad Parameshwara Bhagavathar.

In his next piece, ‘Thulasidhala’ in Mayamalava Gowlai, the niraval of ‘Sarasiruha Punnaga’ was followed by a torrent of swaras flooding the hall.

Unni sang the fast-paced ‘Sarasamukhi’ in Gowda Malhar by Harikesanallur Muthiah Bhagavathar to pep up the concert. His voice glided smoothly and his Thodi was enchanting like his voice.

He bought out the entire gamut of the raga in all its grandeur with the rendition of ‘Thaye Yasodha’ by Oothukadu Venkata Subbier. The swara passages were rendered with finesse.

The popular song ‘Srichakra Raja’, a ragamalika by sage Agasthya, was infused with devotion.

Vittal Ramamurthy on the violin had the distinct stamp of his school (Lalgudi) with his melodic touches. His vinyasa of Thodi was exemplary.

Young and energetic mridangist Parupalli Phalgun played with sagacity with his delectable strokes drawing an appreciative nod from the audience.

B S Purushotaman on the kanjira enthralled with his deft strokes.

The tani of Phalgun and Purushotaman encompassed a variety of rhythmic inputs.
