A rendez vous with Dr Indira -Siddha doctor

 

                             Today in India over 100 million people suffer from arthritis, says a recent statistics. Arthritis generally recognised as Joint disease or Joint disorder is defined as a disease causing joint inflammation and stiffness. Arthritis is characterized by damaged cartilages or ligaments, redness, swelling, muscle weakness and pain in the joints. Among the different varieties of Arthritis the commonly diagnosed types include Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis.

J. Indra Devi(BSMS,MD-Siddha), renowned siddha doctor who had a passion for traditional medicine right from her childhood, explains us the causes of arthritis, the several treatments available in ancient medical systems and the precautive measures that would prevent arthritis.

a)      WHAT ARE THE GENERAL CAUSES FOR ARTHRITIS?

According to siddha medicine diet and lifestyle plays a major role says Dr.Indra Devi. She points out that changing life style and unhealthy food habits are the major reasons that has led to this increased   arthritis  problem.Besides these excessive use of joints and family history are other common reasons causing arthritis explains Dr.Indra Devi. Age factor also plays a vital role in arthritis states Dr.Indra.

b)      ARTHRITIS – ACCORDING TO SIDDHA?

Dr.Indra puts forth arthritis according to siddha theory occurs due to the imbalance of vatha humour. She further continues that siddha theory strongly believes on the equilibrium of the three humours- vatham, pithamand kapalam.

Vatham refers to the combination of air and space, Pitham represents fire, earth and water form kapalam. So when the balance between these three is disturbed it leads to diseases and disorders. Generally, vatham which is a combination of air and space is disturbed, arthritis occurs.

c)      WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF ARTHRITIS IN CHILDREN?

Dr.Indra says that, there is possibility of children affected by arthritis. She claims that though there exists several reasons behind it one of the identifiable reason is inheritance. That is, they are sometimes transferred through genes. She also emphasises that this is only one of the possibilities and there is no need that arthritis should always be genetic.

d)      WHAT ARE THE GENERAL TREATMENTS INVOLVED IN ARTHRITIS?

 She says that, both external and internal treatments are involved in treating arthritis and depending upon the patients, the affected parts(like knee joints, hip joints,…etc) the treatment differs. Generally paspam, chendooram, chooranam, tablets are the medicines prescribed for internal consumptions.Thylam and Ennai are used for external applications and massage, she adds that strict diet also forms a part of arthritis treatment. Patients are asked to follow  vegetarian diets and avoid sour food and salty appetites in general.

 

 

e)        CAN   IT  BE CURED PERMANENTLY?

According to her: the curability of arthritis largely relies  on patient’s immune system and age. Early diagnosis usually increases the curability rate. Proper medication and following strict diets will offer good relief.

e)      WHAT IS TO BE DONE TO AVOID ARTHRITIS?

Dr.Indra suggests us to follow healthy diet habits and to perform regular simple exercises. She also advices to practice yoga. She concludes stating that good food and proper sleeping habits are essential to lead a disease free life.
